Texarkana, Texas, is finishing a major upgrade to its weather alert sirens, with the last ten of thirteen units set to be installed in the next few weeks.

Texarkana, Texas, is finishing a major upgrade to its weather alert sirens, with the last ten of thirteen units set to be installed in the next few weeks. Some sirens haven’t been updated in more than 50 years.

The new models will allow emergency crews to activate them manually or automatically during National Weather Service alerts. Fire Chief Chris Black says the sirens are meant to warn people who are outside to go inside and seek shelter.

The project should be complete in two to four weeks, depending on weather, and will place sirens to cover more than 90% of residents. The city also urges people to sign up for Hyper-Reach alerts.
